Topic: Subcontractor Cost Control — Managing Commitments, Scopes, and Changes in Contractor Foreman

Webinar Description

In this advanced training session, Taha focuses on one of the most challenging — and costly — aspects of running a construction business: managing subcontractors. As typically the largest expense after internal payroll, subcontractors represent an external variable that is difficult to control without the right systems in place. This session walks through how Contractor Foreman’s subcontract, bidding, and reporting tools work together to give project managers tighter control over subcontractor costs, scopes, and commitments from start to finish.

Taha opens by addressing one of the most common pain points he encountered as a project manager: vague or missing scopes of work. When a subcontractor’s scope is not explicitly defined, ambiguities become the contractor’s problem — and they translate directly into unexpected change orders, incomplete work, and disputes over who is responsible for what. He walks through how the subcontract module in Contractor Foreman is designed specifically to address this, allowing project managers to write detailed scopes of work, inclusions, exclusions, backcharge terms, and cleanup expectations directly into the subcontract — creating a binding, accessible record that a purchase order alone cannot provide.

The session also covers the bidding feature within the estimate module, which Taha highlights as one of the most underused tools in Contractor Foreman. Rather than collecting quotes through email and manually comparing them, project managers can send a formal bid package directly from an estimate to multiple subcontractors, receive their pricing responses through a structured link, and compare bids before awarding work — all without leaving the platform. Taha walks through the full flow live, from creating a bid package to what the subcontractor sees in their inbox and how responses come back into the system.

The final portion of the session ties subcontract management back to project financial visibility, revisiting the relationship between committed costs and actual costs covered in the previous week’s session. Taha shows how the Job Cost Actual Report and the Project Financials table give project managers a clear, line-item view of what’s been budgeted, what’s been committed through subcontracts and purchase orders, and what’s actually been spent — so that profit projections reflect reality rather than assumptions based on incomplete data.

Attendees were offered a complimentary one-on-one training session to go deeper on subcontract setup, scope writing, or any other module covered in the session.

This session is ideal for:

  • General contractors and project managers who rely heavily on subcontractors and want tighter control over scope, cost, and performance
  • Anyone who has experienced subcontractor disputes over scope inclusions or exclusions that weren’t clearly documented upfront
  • Teams currently using purchase orders for subcontractor work who want to understand when and why a subcontract is the better tool
  • Estimators and project managers looking to streamline the bidding process and compare subcontractor quotes without managing it through email
