How Do I Add Taxes and Tax Rates to My Account?

Incorporating taxes and tax rates into your Contractor Foreman account streamlines financial accuracy by automatically applying the appropriate percentages to estimates, invoices, and other documents. This feature eliminates manual calculations, reduces errors, and ensures compliance with local regulations, allowing you to focus more on project execution than on bookkeeping details.

Access the Settings Module

The process begins in the central hub for account customizations, where financial configurations like tax rates are managed. This module provides a structured environment for tailoring the platform to your business’s specific fiscal needs, ensuring that tax applications align seamlessly with your workflows.

  1. From the main navigation Menu, select Settings. The Settings module serves as the gateway to all personalization options, including financial adjustments that impact invoicing and reporting across projects.

  1. Open the Financial settings. Financial settings house critical elements like tax management, enabling precise control over how costs are calculated and presented in client-facing documents.

Locate and Add Tax Rates

With Financial settings loaded, proceed to the specific section for tax configurations. This placement allows for quick oversight of existing rates and straightforward additions, supporting both simple and complex tax structures as required by your operations.

  1. Scroll down to the Tax Rates section. The Tax Rates section displays any pre-configured rates and provides tools for expansion, ensuring your account reflects current jurisdictional requirements without disrupting ongoing financial tasks.

To introduce a new rate, initiate the creation form from this interface. This step-by-step input method promotes data integrity, as each field is designed to capture essential details for accurate application.

  1. On the right side of the Tax Rates section, click the Add Tax Rate + button. Activating the Add Tax Rate + button opens a dedicated form, which supports flexible tax setups—whether a standalone rate or a composite one combining multiple levies—for versatility in diverse billing scenarios.

Configure the Tax Rate Details

In the resulting form, define the parameters that govern how the tax behaves in your documents. This customization ensures the system interprets and applies taxes precisely as intended, enhancing the reliability of automated outputs.

  1. Select the tax type (single or combined). Choosing between a single tax rate or a combined one accommodates varying regulatory environments, allowing the platform to handle straightforward percentages or layered calculations effortlessly.

  2. Enter the Tax Name and Tax Percentage. The Tax Name should be descriptive, such as “State Sales Tax” or “VAT,” to facilitate easy identification during document creation. For the Tax Percentage, input the exact value, like “10%” for a standard sales tax, ensuring calculations reflect real-world rates without approximation.

  3. Optionally, check Tax is Reversible. Enabling Tax is Reversible applies the tax to the document total and then reverses it, aligning the final amount with the subtotal—a useful option for specific accounting adjustments or preview purposes.

  4. Click Save to finalize the addition. Saving integrates the new rate into your account, making it immediately selectable in modules like estimates and invoices, where it will automate tax inclusion for future entries.

This configuration not only populates your tax library but also integrates dynamically with other financial tools, promoting consistency across all project-related paperwork.

Supplementary Notes

Additional Tip: To automate tax application, set a default rate within Financial settings by enabling options under the “Automatically select to ‘Tax’ these item types” section. This designates specific item categories for default taxation on new estimates, minimizing repetitive selections and boosting efficiency in high-volume invoicing. For multi-jurisdictional projects, maintain multiple rates and review them periodically to accommodate rate changes.
