Let’s first clarify, Opportunities do not have line items. The Opportunity record is meant to serve as a place to organize and attach all related files, notes, drawings, or photos for a potential project. It helps you track and manage the pre-construction stage but does not hold cost or quantity data.

Here’s how the workflow actually works:

  1. Create an Opportunity – This is where you gather all project-related information before it becomes official.
  2. Create an Estimate from the Opportunity – Within the Opportunity, use the three-dot (⋮) icon to create an Estimate. This links both records together.
  3. Add Line Items to the Estimate – Inside the Estimate, add your cost items, including Cost Code, Item Type, Description, Quantity, Unit Cost, and Total.
  4. Approve the Estimate – Once the Estimate is approved, the Opportunity is converted into a Project.
  5. Generate the Schedule of Values (SOV) – During the conversion, you’ll be given the option to import all the Estimate line items into the SOV, allowing you to manage progress billing and track your invoicing accurately.

In short, the flow goes:
Opportunity → Estimate → Project → Schedule of Values (SOV)

This process keeps your financial data clean, ensures continuity, and helps you easily move from the sales stage to project execution and invoicing.
