Accurate takeoffs depend on a correctly calibrated drawing scale. Before placing any measurements or quantities, the drawing scale must be reviewed and verified to ensure all takeoff data reflects real-world dimensions.

This article explains how to review, verify, and manually calibrate the drawing scale inside the takeoff tool.

Step 1: Select the Drawing Sheet

Select the drawing sheet you plan to use for takeoffs.
For this example, open one of the detail plans.

Clicking on the sheet opens the drawing inside the takeoff tool interface in Contractor Foreman.

Step 2: Identify the Drawing Scale on the Plan

Before using any takeoff tools, locate the scale provided by the architect.
The scale is typically shown directly on the drawing, often below the plan views or near the title block.

For example, the drawing may indicate a scale of 1/4 inch = 1 foot.
This is the reference scale that must be applied inside the takeoff tool.

Step 3: Review the Current Scale Setting

Scroll to the bottom-right corner of the screen to locate the scale indicator.
This scale is automatically assigned by default and may not always match the drawing.

Click the orange scale button to review the current scale setting.
If the displayed scale does not match the scale shown on the drawing, it must be adjusted.

Step 4: Select the Correct Preset Scale

Using the scale menu, select the preset that matches the drawing scale.
In this case, choose 1/4 inch = 1 foot.

Once selected, the tool applies the preset scale to the drawing.

Step 5: Verify the Scale Using a Known Dimension

Always verify the scale by measuring a known dimension on the drawing.

  1. Locate a dimension shown on the plan, such as 9 feet, 0 inches.

  2. Select the Measure Lines tool (ruler icon).

  3. Click once at one end of the dimension and again at the other end.

If the measured value does not match the dimension shown on the drawing, the preset scale is incorrect and manual calibration is required.

Step 6: Manually Calibrate the Scale

To manually calibrate the scale:

  1. Exit the measurement tool.

  2. Click the blue Calibrate Scale button.

  3. Zoom in as needed and place the first point precisely at one end of a known dimension.

  4. Place the second point at the opposite end of that same dimension.

  5. Enter the exact dimension value (for example, 9 feet, 0 inches) and click Save.

This process defines the scale based on an actual known measurement from the drawing.

Step 7: Confirm the Calibration

Verify the calibration before proceeding:

  1. Use the Measure Lines tool to measure the same dimension again.

  2. Confirm that it now reads 9 feet, 0 inches.

  3. Measure an additional known dimension, such as one labeled 2 feet, to confirm consistency.

Matching measurements confirm that the drawing scale is correctly calibrated.

Result

With the drawing scale properly reviewed and calibrated, the plan is now ready for accurate takeoffs.
All measurements and quantities created from this drawing will reflect true dimensions.

The next step is building takeoffs using the calibrated plans.Reviewing & Calibrating Drawing Scale
