In the context of Sales and Project Management, a “Lead” and an “Opportunity” typically represent different stages in the business development process.

Lead:

A lead is usually a potential client or company that has shown initial interest in your products or services.
It often refers to the early stage of engagement, where there may be some interest or need, but there hasn’t been a detailed discussion or commitment yet.
Leads can be individuals or organizations that you’ve identified as potential customers, but you’re still in the process of establishing a connection and gauging their requirements.

When a Lead is generated in Contractor Foreman, it can be found in the Leads Module or in the Directory under the Leads Contact Type. Leads can be converted into Customers. If this happens, the Lead will no longer be under the Leads module, however we will be able to see it in the Directory under the Customers Contact Type.

You can create an Estimate from the Lead’s profile.

Opportunity:

An opportunity, on the other hand, is a more advanced stage in the sales process.
It usually means that there has been some level of discussion, and there is a specific project or need that the potential client is considering.
Opportunities often arise when a lead progresses to a point where there is a concrete chance of securing a contract or project with the client. It’s a more qualified prospect. Also, Opportunities are commonly used for when you have already done business with somebody in the past and you have another opportunity to do another project with them.

While a Lead can be converted into a Customer, an Opportunity can be converted to a Project. If this happens, the Opportunity will no longer be under the Opportunities Module, it will be moved and converted to a Project, under the Projects Module.

In summary, a lead is a potential customer in the early stages of engagement, while an opportunity is a more qualified prospect where there is a specific project or contract on the table, and there’s a real chance of moving forward.

You can create an Estimate from the Opportunity. Also, Opportunities can be created for existing Customers or for potential Clients; Leads.
